Pathological Substances – Human organs, body parts, and all other human tissues excluding skin.
Animal-Related Contaminants – Any animal bodies, parts, and all infected bedding or materials that came into contact with potential human-infecting microorganisms.
Sharps – Needles, syringes, lancets, auto-injectors, infusion sets, and anything that could be contaminated with biohazardous material that has sharp points or edges.
Microbiological Substances – Concentrated infectious agents including etiologic agents, specimen cultures, live/attenuated viruses, body fluids infected with pathogens, contaminated culture dishes, and waste created from producing serums and biologicals.
Storage Requirements for Biohazardous Waste
Biohazardous waste must be stored in such a way that the pathogens, microorganisms, and other materials cannot be released or allowed to transmit through the container. Any item classified as a “sharp” must be placed into the appropriate, puncture-resistant container, clearly labeled, and stored safely.

The “red bag” is a disposal bag specifically designed to handle biohazardous waste safely. You can place the following into the red bag: bloody items like plastic tubing, gloves, personal protective equipment, bandages, gauze, and other blood-contaminated cloth-like materials.
Sharps in closed, sealed, and puncture-resistant containers can also be placed into the red bag. Loose sharps are not appropriate.
Chemical, hazardous, and radioactive wastes should also be placed into a different receptacle.
